We have achieved down-conversion format for all amateur bands:
A key point in tapping maximum performance from the 1st mixer in actual operation (say, CW operation) is to prevent the outflow of unnecessary signals, other than the target signal, from the mixer to the subsequent stage. This is because it can tap the maximum performance of the digital IF filter using the DSP in the final IF stage. The TS-990S main receiver employs a 1st IF frequency 8.248 MHz down-conversion format. It achieves superior close-in dynamic range unattainable through conventional up-conversion formats. Even if the interference is a close-in frequency, the receiver maintains a relatively flat dynamic range, which you can tune without losing your target signal.

The horizontal axis shows separation of the target signal by interfering signal frequencies (two waves). At a frequency of 10 kHz, interference 1 refers to reception frequency + 10 kHz, and interference 2 refers to reception frequency + 20 kHz.

The newly adopted mixer contributes to achieving +40 dBm IP3:
In place of the Double Balanced Mixer, which uses the J-FET, we have installed the newly adopted Double Balanced Grounded Switch Type (H-mode mixer) in the 1st mixer circuit, which is the heart of the main receiver. The transceiver is also equipped with a pre selector function (works on HF amateur band) that varies its tuning frequency in tandem with the receiver frequency. It effectively dampens interference from strong signals that cannot be minimized through bandpass filters on dedicated amateur bands. Furthermore, we have achieved a +40 dBm class of third-order intercept point for the signal path of the 1st mixer, based on select circuits and components, employing large core toroidal coils for protecting against distortion from large input signals, as well as using relays for the signal switching.

The newly developed narrow-band High-IP roofing filters show their true value by cutting adjacent unwanted signals:
The transceiver uses the down-conversion method on all amateur bands, and features five types of High-IP roofing filter. Narrow bandpass widths selectable are 500 Hz and 270 Hz for CW operation,2.7 kHz for SSB and 6 kHz and 15 kHz, which are suitable for AM/FM. These filters are automatically selected in tandem with DSP-based settings. Of course, manual switching is possible as well.

High C/N levels are realized by dividing high frequencies using the newly developed VCO frequency division 1st local oscillator:
The TS-990S Local Oscillator Circuit is an independent configuration that combines the main receiver and VCO Frequency Division/DDS, the sub-receiver, DDS, transmitter and conventional PLL, with the targeted signal system. The newly developed VCO frequency division format is used for the 1st local oscillator of the main receiver. The device achieves favorable C/N characteristics that rival the DDS direct format, and relatively spurious-free local oscillation signals that are characteristic of the PLL format, by oscillating and dividing the VCO at higher frequencies than the intended frequency. It is possible to convert it to 1st IF in a pure state without leaking the target signal as noise by reducing static noise from the local oscillator and increasing the C/N ratio.

Comes equipped with +-0.1 ppm TCXO, which combines high stability and energy saving:
The standard equipment includes a TCXO (Temperature-Compensated Crystal Oscillator), which stabilizes frequencies at ±0.1 ppm as the standard signal source. Unlike OCXO (Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator), which requires warm-up time, this device can start up quickly even from the power-off position, while maintaining a high level of stability. It is in compliance with European energy-saving standard Lot 6. Power consumption in stand-by energy-saving mode is less than 0.5 W.

The TS-2000/2000X is serious about digital signal processing. KENWOOD''s advanced digital technology converts analog waveforms into digital data in real-time, enabling such digital processing as IF filtering, slope tune, auto notch and AGC. IF-stage DSP on main-band transmit and receive - including V/UHF bands - allows the greatest range of control and unprecedented performance.

DSP Detection:
IF-stage DSP means that the TS-2000/2000X offers significantly lower distortion and higher quality detection in all modes.(FM: digital AF filter)

Degital Filtering:
There is absolutely no need to purchase optional filters: digital IF filters are available for each mode (FM: digital AF filter), offering performance superior to anything possible with analog circuitry. When operating in SSB/FM/AM modes, this digital filtering enables both high-and low-cut frequency variance. Employing slope tune, you can thus cut out noise with minimal effect on sound quality. In AM mode, the high-cut frequency can reduce interference by controlling the IF pass bandwidth - useful for receiving shortwave broadcasts. In CW mode, the WIDTH function is supplemented by center frequency shirt, allowing adjacent signal interference to be tuned out. The WIDTH function also provides noise reduction caoabilities in FSK with 4 steps available: 250,500,1000 and 1500Hz. And thanks to AF-stage DSP, independent control of high-cut and low-cut frequencies(12 steps each) provides slope tune capability in FM as well.

IF Auto Notch:
Since it is working with a digital signal, IF Auto North (main band, SSB mode) can provideextremely sharp filterring of carrier frequencies from broadcast and continuous beat sources. The interfering beat is removed far more accurately than in conventional analog systems, and Auto Notch will even track changes in the beat signal (tracking speed can be varied in 5 steps).

If AGC:
The digital AGC circuit (main band only) delivers very fast release characteristics, surpassing even the best analog designs. You can select a custom release time (20 steps) for each mode, except FM.

DSP is also executed at the AF stage, offering Beat Cancel and CW Auto Tune functions. It also enables you to achieve remarkable noise reduction and apply custom enhancements to your transmitted voice.

Beat Cancel:
Automatic Beat Cancel, available for the main band (SSB and AM modes), immediately eliminates multiple beats interfering with a desired signal. It works well in combination with IF Auto-Notch (SSB).

Manual Beat Cancel:
A new Manual Beat Cancel function, which operates as a manual AF notch, can be used in all modes - though it is particularly effective in CW.

CW Auto Tune:
You no longer have to adjust the VFO while operating on CW - CW Auto Tune does it for you automatically by adjusting the VFO to your preset pitch at the touch of a button.

Noise Reduction:
There are 2 types of noise reduction: LEM (NR1) and SPAC (NR2). LEM (Line Enhancer Method) - available for all modes on the main band and FM/AM on the sub band - automatically forms a filter shape around the target signal for a custom, dynamic noise reduction capability. The degree of enhancement can also be set manually for mainband use. The SPAC (Speech Processing/Auto Correlation) function utilizes a special statistical/ correlation algorithm to pull out weak signals that are buried deep in noise. Although available for all modes on the main band, it''s especially useful for tough CW conditions. The correlation time setting can be adjusted in 10 steps between 2ms and 20ms.

TX Audio Shaping:
You have 3 ways to tailor audio quality with DSP: the TX/RX equalizer (SSB/FM/AM), TX filter bandwidth (SSB/AM), and speech processor (SSB/FM/AM).

High RF Power Output:
Equipped with a twin final section featuring splitter and combiner circuitry, the TS-480HX can provide up to 200 watts RF output (50MHz: 100W) with a DC 13.8V power supply. The TS-480SAT delivers up to 100 watts.

Separate Power Sources:
The 200W TS-480HX features two power terminals (DC1, DC2) for separate supply to each half of the twin final section; voltage balance is optimized to ensure stable output. This arrangement allows for use of two PS-53 power supplies or a single 41A power source.

Twin Cooling Fans:
When used for extended periods, the heat build-up inside a compact transceiver can be a serious concern, reducing its working life. But the components in the heavy-duty TS-480HX/SAT are designed to withstand heat. What is more, it is equipped with a die-cast aluminum chassis and twin fans for enhanced cooling efficiency. And since the control panel is separate from the main unit, the fans are able to generate a powerful airflow from front to back. As a result, you can rely on this transceiver to transmit continuously for 30 minutes* without having to power down. *This figure is supplied for reference purposes only and depends on there being an ambient temperature of 25. C, antenna SWR of 1.2 or less, and nothing to obstruct the air flow generated by the cooling fans.

RX Dynamic:
A quad-mixer provides RX dynamic range equivalent to that of the TS-950 class (at 50 kHz separation).

CW Support:
There is a full range of CW features, including auto tune. When in SSB mode, a simple key-press will switch automatically to CW. Another convenient feature is the ability to record three different messages for quick transmission during contests. You can choose between full and semi-break-in; for the former the delay time between key release and active receive mode can be set for between 50ms and 1000ms in 50ms steps. Other CW features include pitch control (400-1000Hz), side tone monitor with 10-step volume setting, an electronic keyer, microphone paddle mode and CW reverse mode.

IF Filters(Option):
Optionally available for more intense operations are 500Hz and 270Hz band CW narrow IF filters (YF-107C, YF-107CN), as well as a 1.8kHz band SSB narrow IF filter (YF-107SN). Any two of these IF filters can be installed inside the transceiver.

AF Digital Signal Processing(TX/RX):
Thanks to a 16-bit digital signal processor offering double-precision arithmetic operations (equivalent to 32-bit processing), a 100MHz clock and 16-bit A/D & D/A converters, the TS-480HX/SAT offers many powerful features.

Digital Noise Limiter(DNL):
With three level settings, the DNL is highly effective in removing even the pulse noise that cannot be eliminated with conventional analog circuitry and noise blankers. For extra clarity, however, it can be used in conjunction with a noise blanker, which removes pulse noise at the IF stage.

Beat Cancel(SSB/AM only):
DSP will also cancel out multiple beats falling within the AF filter range. Choose BC1 to remove weak and/or continuous beat interference, or BC2 to handle intermittent beat, like that of a CW signal.

Noise Reduction:
NR1 is a line enhanced filter with 10 level settings (including auto) - great for extracting a target signal. A good choice for CW operations is NR2 (SPAC), adjustable in 2ms increments (2~20ms); it can suppress noise at the same frequency as the target signal, allowing it to pull a weak target signal out from the surrounding noise.

TX/RX Equalizer:
The equalizer offers flat (default), high boost (2 types), formant pass, bass boost (2 types), conventional and user* settings, separately for transmit and receive. *Configurable using the ARCP-480 radio control program.
